Editorial Reviews : See photography at its finest with the Canon Digital Rebel 6.3-megapixel digital SLR camera. Intuitive controls allow you to get creative with your pictures, and 6.3-megapixels of resolution command rich detail and depth. The 7-point wide-area auto focus ensures precise images even when the subject is off-center, and its incredibly fast speed captures clear images of even the most dynamic subjects. Plus, editing and printing are a breeze with direct print capability and included software.
Buyer Reviews : We originally had decided to purchase the Sony DSF-717, and we went down to a very reputable camera store to check it out. After holding it and looking through the terrible EVF, we began to have doubts. The salesman offered us a look at the comparable Canon Powershot G5 as an alternative. We handled the camera and were quite impressed with its features, but disappointed by its zoom flexibility and potential for long-term use.
I'm a serious amateur photographer and my husband is a newbie. I don't think he's ever used more than a disposable camera, so having a camera that serves a dual function in terms of ease of use as well as powerful manual features was important.
When the salesman brought out the Canon EOS Digital Rebel and I held it in my hands, I fell in love immediately. I'm a Canon loyalist at heart, and this camera is no slouch. It is strong and just heavy enough to feel perfect in your hands. My inclination was to purchase a digital camera to 'replace' my beloved Pentax ME Super which died recently after many years of use. I wanted SLR quality at an affordable price. This camera has it.
The flexibility of interchangable lenses is a huge plus. At its price, it can't be matched in this department. There is a huge selection of available Canon lenses at very reasonable prices. This is a camera that you will use for years. The amateur photographer doesn't need much more than 6.3 megapixels, and this camera delivers that with rich, clear, accurate colors and crispness.
One of the first things that astounded us was the speed of this camera. Unlike many digital cameras which have that frustrating delay between the push of the shutter button and the capture of the image, this camera won't do that to you. There is virtually no delay that I can see. What you snap, you get.
Optical viewfinders are a must if you're spending the big bucks. I cannot stress this enough. EVFs are terrible and pointless. The OVF on this camera is excellent. It also has excellent power-saving options and puts the photographer in control. In full manual mode you are in charge of shutter speed, ISO, aperture settings and it even has a depth of field preview.
So far, we are both enamored of this camera. I can't put it down. It takes beautiful pictures. It has Canon's typical variety of features which make it completely compatible with non-camera savvy people and serious amateurs alike. You could travel with this camera and use it as both a point-and-shoot, or you could switch it to its manual function and feel like you're using a completely flexible camera where you are in control. And everything is wonderfully intuitive, unlike many other digital cameras I've played with. You won't be fiddling around endlessly in deep, confusing menus with this camera. If you've ever used an old SLR camera before, you will be able to find your way around this one in a snap. If not, the manual will get you started.
The software is perfectly acceptable and easy to use. You just plug the camera into your computer and without even consulting the manual you will know what to do to get the images saved to your computer. In the past we have been very disappointed with Canon software, but this time they got it right.
We love this camera.
There is really no reason not to jump up a level to this camera if you're considering one of the models below it in the pseudo-SLR 5 megapixel range. You won't regret the extra dollars you spend. These are camera people making this camera, and it shows. This camera will be completely flexible and enjoyable for years, while many of the ones just below it will be obsolete in just a couple years. This is a camera that could turn a non-camera person into somebody who loves taking pictures just for the joy of it.
Just take this baby for a test-drive at your local, knowledgeable camera store and you will fall in love with it too. We got a fantastic deal on it with the 18-55mm lens and a 256MB CF card.
